Spring 2011 - THE POTOMAC

Strangers on a Bus
   Daniel Cotzin Burg

Three strangers on a bus
Of three races, of two genders
One has kids with him, laughing child-like in their soccer jerseys

A man boards, gesticulating
Nervous ticks
Ants in the pants
The strangers squirm

When he finally leaves, they burst out laughing
"Did you see that!"
"What was wrong with him?"
"Must have been allergic to children."

Three strangers on a bus
Of three races, of two genders
United in laughter
Strangers no longer

Or strangers, perhaps
But not stranger
Than he
